“In a painting, I try to make some logic out of the world that has been given to me in chaos… The fact that I know I am doomed to failure - that doesn’t deter me in the least.”
Grace Hartigan, Artist (Abstract Expressionist)
More Work To Do
OK, so far this year, I have been trying some new theme, styles and techniques. I am a bit frustrated because, with the exception of the “Blue Dress” drawings (see above), nothing really seems to be working or exciting me all that much.
I started off the year very motivated, however, as I write this, I am feeling somewhat discouraged.
Of course, now the door is wide open for negative thoughts such as self-doubt, frustration, procrastination and defeat to come walking right on in. It would be really easy to quit, take a nap, eat or go watch a movie.
However, when I really think about it, nothing, whatsoever is wrong here. This does not mean that I am a terrible artist, or that I am making horrible stuff.
All this means is that I have not found any magic, yet. I have not discovered what I am looking for, yet. I obviously have more work to do.
I always have the process, the act of creating, the doing, the attempt, the searching, the exploring. All of which I love. So, I have to stay focused on all of that and keep trying. Trust my skill, my talent, and my instincts. And, trust the process. And, love every minute of it. And, keep going.
And, most importantly, resist the temptation to revert backwards, play it safe and seek comfort in what I already know how to do.
In the meantime, it’s “Blue Dress” drawings for everyone!
Best,
David
