“It’s the canvas that’s afraid of a true painter, and not the painter who’s afraid of the canvas.”
Vincent van Gogh, Artist
Reframing Fear
What is fear to an artist, anyway?
For an artist fear is the fear of the unknown. Fear is the fear of ruining a painting. Fear is the fear of not knowing what to do next to your painting. Fear is the fear of not feeling like you have the skills or talent to create what you want to create.
You know these are just thoughts, right?
Your thoughts. About how you think something might go. And, not being able to control what happens.
When an artist paints, they never really know what will happen, or how it will turn out.
An artist may have an idea or a vision of how they want their painting to look. But, they don’t really know. And, this is where fear sneaks in.
Instead of saying, “I am hesitant to rework this painting because I am afraid I might ruin it”, try saying, “I am not sure how this painting will turn out, but I have an opportunity to create something very special.”
Instead of being afraid to try, be curious about what will happen if you do.
Instead of hesitation, choose courage.
Instead of fear, embrace curiosity and opportunity instead.
Whether you are able to create what you envision or not, either way there will be learning involved. Can’t learn if you don’t try.
Accept that fear is going to exist and CREATE ANYWAY.
Best,
David
