“Creating art requires a lot of time in my studio, at my easel, with my paint and charcoal, before something emerges and begins to happen. If being an artist has taught me nothing else, it has taught me patience.”

20 Little Known Facts About Me
1. Some of you may know this. I have written a book called Create Anyway. (Which will be available late Summer or early Fall.) But what you don’t know is that I wrote the entire book by hand on legal pads.
2. I worked for the Los Angels Herald Examiner newspaper for 5 years as an illustrator, designer and art director.
3. All of my studios have been in garages, except for the live/work loft I inhabited for 5 years in downtown Los Angeles. It was an old Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery building complex.
4. My all time favorite art crushes in no particular order are: Edvard Munch, Egon Schiele, Patrick Graham, Jim Dine, Willem De Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg, Squeek Carnwath, Susan Rothenberg, and Michelangelo.
5. My favorite colors are black, white, Payne's gray, raw umber dark, naples yellow, and mineral blue.
6. My two favorite formal qualities about art are value contrast and line quality.
7. My favorite surface to work on is paper. My second favorite is wood.
8. I have been teaching for over 35 years. Teaching is my second favorite thing to do. My favorite thing to do is create images.
9. I hate washing dishes and cleaning the house. But, I still do them. Oh, yeah, I don’t like to mow the lawn and wash the car either, but I still do those too.
10. Some of the most fascinating people I have ever met are the art models who I have worked with in the classroom.
11. I still love reading a newspaper. I love the feel of the newsprint and the smell of the ink.
12. My dad passed away eight years ago and my mom five years ago. I still think about them everyday. My dad still makes me laugh.
13. I don’t have a “sweet” tooth, but I do have a “salt” tooth. Is that a thing?
14. I drink a ton of water.
15. My third favorite thing to do is help artists be the best, most productive artists they can be in their studios.
16. I mostly enjoyed living in Los Angeles for 35 years, but I am really enjoying living on the California Central Coast.
17. I first got turned on to art in the 5th grade. One day my teacher (I still remember her name) came in to the classroom with boxes of supplies, including wire, plaster of paris and paint. I was hooked.
18. As a child and young teen, I didn’t really know what an artist was or what they did. I just knew I wanted to be one.
19. I spent four years designing and painting sets for a local theater in my home town of Salinas, California.
20. I love everything having to do with being creative. But, one of my favorite things is the sound of art-making. The scrape of the pencil on paper, the swoosh of the brush on canvas, the gurgle and swish of the brush being cleaned in a bucket of water, and the grind of sandpaper as it tears at the surface.
Best,
