BETTER IS BETTER
I want to add some muted, grayed down color to some of my new paintings, so I am exploring some possibilities in these smaller figurative studies. Each, 16”x 12”, graphite, charcoal, acrylic and collage on wood. © 2021 David Limrite
“I could make a hundred drawings for each one I get. I am positive that by rubbing out and trying to do better, the whole drawing gains a kind of history and substance that it didn’t have before.”
Jim Dine, Artist
Better Is Better
“I think I can make it better.”
This is me talking to myself as I am standing in front of a painting in progress on my easel.
Notice I said “better” not “perfect.”
I gave up on perfect long ago. Striving for perfection came with too much frustration and disappointment.
Better is way more positive and encouraging. And achievable.
Better could mean:
- I think I can draw or paint that foot better.
- I think I can mix a better, more interesting green.
- My next painting is going to be better than my last one.
- This painting is complete for now because I just don’t think I can make it any better.
- This painting is better than I thought it would be.
Sometimes a painting has to get worse before it gets better. And you have to be willing for that to happen. And you’re probably going to have to manage disappointment and frustration during this transformation from worse to better. But as long as you know that is coming, you can handle it.
As long as you are going for better, (and not perfect), you and the painting are going to be just fine.
Striving for better will help you become a more empowered, confident, skilled and educated artist.
Be on the lookout for better. “Is this current painting better than my last one?” “Is this painting better now than it was 30 minutes ago?”
Be a better artist who makes better paintings.
Best,
David
