“I cannot expect even my own art to provide all the answers - only to hope it keeps asking the right questions.”
Grace Hartigan, Artist

What Your Painting Is And Isn’t

Finding out what your art isn’t, is just as important as finding out what it is.

Are you paintings:

  • Bold or subtle

  • Bright or muted

  • Loose or tight

  • Realistic, expressionistic or abstract

  • Large or small

  • Whimsical or serious

  • Dark or light

  • Melancholy or uplifting

  • Textured or flat

  • Communicating a message or purely for visual pleasure

  • Horizontal, vertical, square or round

  • Depicting a “Thing” or an expression of that “Thing”

  • Filled with geometric, or organic shapes, or both

…and on and on. I think you get the idea.

The only way to know what your painting is and what it isn’t, is to paint. A lot.

Paint until you find out what your painting is and isn’t.

Or, what it should be.

Or, better yet, what it could be.

Best,

David
