TIME WELL SPENT

Every once in a while, I am able to give in to the process, let myself go, and let the pencils, paint brushes and paint do their thing. This was one of those times. “Untitled File Folder Drawing”, 18”x12”, pencil, acrylic and spray paint on file folder. © 2020 David Limrite

“The most important tool the artist fashions through constant practice is faith in his ability to produce miracles when they are needed.”

Mark Rothko, Artist

Time Well Spent

I know I have used the above quote by Mark Rothko before, but considering the topic today, I felt it was appropriate to use it again.

Any effort that you make in order to build confidence is time well spent.

Building confidence in your ability to generate ideas, visualize them, and then create them takes time. Building confidence requires hard work. It requires that you create a lot of stuff. It requires a lot of trying. It requires making many, many attempts in order to create what you want to create.

Lots of attempts usually means lots of failing.

But, it also means that you will learn a lot in the process. And, then you try again. And again. And again. You will make a lot of missteps. But you will learn. You most certainly will create a lot of mediocre, if not downright awful art. But, you will learn.

Every time you learn, you build confidence.

Because you are creating a lot of things, some of those things you create will be good. Every time you create something good, (or at least something that was better than the last thing you created), you will build confidence.

Each time you build confidence, you will be willing to take on bigger and more difficult challenges. Which will build more and more confidence.

Like I said, building confidence takes time.

The time spent matters.

Focus on the making, the doing, the attempt, and the time spent.

And know this: Sometimes you will not be able to create what you envision. But with increasing confidence, you know that eventually you will be able to.

Take the time to create as often as you can. It will be time well spent.

Best,

David

Quotes from the Create Anyway Collective (12-week program, currently in progress):

  • "I am so happy I signed up for the program. Love it! You two are like family now!!!"

    Participating CAC Artist, Week 3

  • "[Jordan,] after [the coaching] session...honestly,...I felt released from a curse that had a grip on my soul probably from childhood. It was magical. I am still in wonder about how effective that was. Now I am working in a different way. I feel stronger in my work. The messages from the group were so sweet, too. Lovely people, all of them... You have made a difference in my work habits and thought processes."

Participating CAC Artist, Week 5, regarding a Coaching Session

  • "Thanks again for the CAC program. I enjoy the overall focus on creating...the discussions, coaching, and opportunity to meet other artists, hear their ideas, and see their interesting work. It's the only thing keeping me sane these days!"

    Participating CAC Artist, Week 5
