WHAT DO YOU WANT TO CREATE?

IMG_6043.jpg

I am really enjoying the emotional quality in these file folder drawings. I think, because the surface is not precious, it is allowing me to loosen up and go that extra mile with my media. I am looking forward to attempting some larger pieces with this kind of emotion. “Untitled File Folder Drawing”, 18”x12”, acrylic, spray paint and pencil on file folder. © 2020 David Limrite

“You can’t deny who you are, and you shouldn’t. Embrace every inch and ounce of your blood. All we have is ourselves.”

Fritz Scholder, Artist

What Do You Want To Create?

Actually, it is probably best if you ask yourself:

What do I want to create?

So… go ahead. Ask yourself that question.

What comes up for you?

It could be many things. It could be the answer to what you literally want to paint.

If you are a landscape painter, ask yourself what kind of landscapes (seascapes, cityscapes, urbanscapes) do you want to paint? And then continue with:

What does the landscape represent for me?

What do I want to communicate to viewers through my landscapes?

What is the look and style of my landscapes?

What media and techniques will best help me create the kind of landscapes I want to paint.

Are these landscapes going to be true and authentic for me, and help me express my own personal voice?

These same six questions can be asked if you paint still lifes, figures, animals, abstracts, etc.

Whatever kind of artist you are, does your work reflect you and who you truly, really are? Does your work reflect your thoughts, interests, ideas and sensibilities?

You could also answer the question of, “What Do I Want To Create?” as it pertains to your creative life as an artist and to your art practice as well.

How do I want to craft my creative life? What kind of artistic journey do I want to go on? Am I making the kind of work that I truly want to be making?

How often do I want to paint? Everyday?

How do I want to feel while I am painting?

How do I want to feel about the work that I create?

You could also ask yourself these questions:

Do I want to exhibit my work?

Do I want to sell my work?

Do I want to be involved artistically with my community?

Do I want to be involved with a community of like-minded artists?

Or, do I just want to be left alone to create?

What kind of artistic life do you want to create and live?

All of the above are available to you.

So, what do you want to create?

Best,

David

Quotes from the Create Anyway Collective (12-week program, currently in progress):

  • "When you [work fast], your brain can’t participate. That takes your brain out of it. So that’s not a bad exercise every once in a while. You can put a timer on if you want to. Do some quick things balanced out with doing some slower, longer things."

David Limrite, Lightning Critique Session in the CAC

  • "I've wanted to make my voice more present in my work...it's just starting to be present... So happy I've joined you. You always do great work and are inspiring many to your credit!!!"

Participating CAC Artist (on why she joined the CAC)

  • "Thanks for today’s session. I’m looking forward to the next few weeks…it seems to be a great supportive group. And the support from both of you creates a safe and friendly atmosphere for risk and growth."
