MAKE A MESS

IMG_6148.jpg

I have been using these file folder drawings to create while making a mess. And then I try and find the figure out of the mess. The file folders are not precious, so that helps. And, I love their color. “File Folder Drawing #16”, 18”x 12”, pencil, charcoal, acrylic and spray paint on file folder  © 2020 David Limrite

Robert Motherwell, Artist

Make A Mess

If you are interested in finding out what kind of artist you are, (or could be), you have to make a mess of things.

You have to go for it. Take big risks. Go overboard. Over paint. Over work.

This is what I call “Jumping off the cliff”.

You have to just make a big ol’ mess.

Push yourself beyond what you think you can do. And, push your chosen medium beyond what you think it can do.

Just make a mess. Really screw things up.

You have to be willing to ruin things. Make mistakes. Choose to do the wrong thing. Mix ugly colors. Experience miscalculations. Create failures.

And then, just stop. Breathe. See what you have done. I mean, really look.

And, learn.

And, try it again.

Working this way is hard work. It is risky and it will be scary.

But, working this way will make you a better artist in the long run.. It will empower you to create better, more interesting and more impactful art. And, in the process, you will learn so much about art-making. More importantly, you will learn so much more about yourself as a person and as an artist.

Give yourself this opportunity to learn.

Find out what you’re made of.

Jump off the cliff.

Go make a mess!

Best,

David
