“As an artist one is merely a link in a chain, and whether you find or you don’t find, you can console yourself with that.”
Vincent Van Gogh, Artist
Second Guessing
I am in the process of developing ideas and sketches for a new body of emotionally charged figurative work. (See above photo). I started working on my ideas well before Covid-19.
Since the pandemic began, I, like many others, have become distracted, and my focus has been challenged. My thoughts about life, humans, human behavior and the world at large seem to change daily. My motivation and inspiration have been interrupted.
And then, the horrible killing of George Floyd. And, then the protests, riots, mayhem, looting and destruction of property.
These recent events have caused me to take pause, and among other things, have challenged me by second guessing my original concepts for my new body of work.
I am not happy at all about what is going on in the United States, and the world for that matter. And, I am not happy that I am allowing myself to be angry, fearful and timid all at the same time. And, I am certainly not happy about allowing myself to second guess my original ideas.
But, I have hope.
When I think about staying true to my purpose, my artistic self, and my authentic creative voice, it makes me feel better and it makes me want to stay the course. It makes me want to forge ahead and stay on my path.
Since my work deals with human emotions, I have decided to use what is emotionally going on in the world to enhance the meaning in my already conceived ideas. And, hopefully, this new work will be stronger, more powerful and more emotional.
This feels much better to me than second guessing.
Best,
David
