WHO ARE YOU?
Starting a series of drawings on file folders. Getting back to my charcoal roots. Many, many years ago, I worked on file folders and manilla envelopes. Loved working on those surfaces. “Untitled, File Folder Drawing #1, pencil, conte, charcoal and acrylic on file folder. © 2020 David Limrite
“What are you? What am I? Those are the questions that constantly persecute and torture me and perhaps also play some part in my art.”
Max Beckmann, Artist
Who Are You?
You are on a journey. Your own artists journey. You are following a path with all of its twists and turns, zig-zags, uphill climbs and downhill slides. And a myriad of left and right turns.
You are following this path to find out who you are and to learn how to create work that is uniquely you.
You want to be able to step back from your work and be able to say, “Yep, that's me! I made that, and it feels like it came from me."
You are also following this path to find out what kind of artist makes the kind of work that you make.
Are you an artist who is:
- Thoughtful
- Reflective
- Flamboyant
- Energetic
- Calm, quiet or peaceful
- Emotional
- Serious
- Quirky
- Funny
- Dark
- Mysterious
- Melancholy
- Exuberant
- Upbeat
- Solemn
- Happy
- Angry
- Timid
- Bold
Is who you are, reflected in your work? Or not?
I consider myself an energetic, funny and upbeat person, and yet my art is dark, mysterious and emotional. I like the balance between the two. But it does throw people off sometimes. Which is OK too.
So… Who are you? And what kind of artist are you?
Paint and find out.
Discover yourself by the work you create. Or, you may discover how different you are from the art that you make.
Either way, continue on your journey. Stay on your path and discover who you are. And, make the kind of art you want to make.
Be well and stay healthy,
David
