BRAVE AND AFRAID
Another one of the projects that consumed me this year. Let me just say that I am not an abstract painter by any stretch of the imagination. However, there are a lot of abstract elements in my figurative work. I wanted to experience what it takes and what it feels like to create completely abstract paintings. Each piece is untitled, 12”x 12”, acrylic, collage and pencil on canvas. © 2020 David Limrite
“I find sometimes I may want to end up with subtlety, but I have to start out boldly. I think you have to exaggerate to get it across. All I can say is that you have to lean over a little to the left, and overdo it a bit, and then come back into balance, that ever-important balance.”
Andrew Wyeth, Artist
Brave and Afraid
As artists, there will be times when we are afraid of the painting that we are currently working on.
We might be afraid to start a new painting, because we are not sure how to begin.
We might be able to begin a new painting, and find that at some point we lose our way, get stuck, or lose our motivation. And then, become afraid to continue for fear of making incorrect choices.
We might be ready to finish a painting, and discover that we are afraid to add the finishing touches for fear of ruining it.
I think it is best to acknowledge that fear exists. Accept that fear will be in the passenger seat, right next to us, as we navigate our way through the creation of a painting.
The trick is to not let fear inch over into the drivers seat and take control of the wheel.
We need to be brave and find the courage to create. And, continue to take each next step. Make the next decision. Mix the next color. And, apply the next brush stroke.
More often than not, we will find ourselves being both brave and afraid at the same time.
Always try your best to choose the brave action.
Best,
David
P.S. I am beyond thrilled to announce the inaugural Online Reception and Exhibit for the 18 artists of the Create Anyway Collective. These artists have been creating, exploring, diving deep, meeting deadlines, busting through obstacles and generating new beliefs about themselves and their creativity. Join me in discovering and celebrating their work during our Online Reception. See below.
