THERE IS NO WAY TO PREDICT
Just having fun making marks and brush strokes. Playing with how little figure I can get away with. “Untitled”, 10”x 8”, acrylic, collage and pencil on wood. © 2020 David Limrite
“A picture is not thought out and settled beforehand. While it is being done it changes as one’s thoughts change.”
Picasso
There Is No Way To Predict
You have an idea. You have a vision. You can imagine what you want the finished painting to look like. But, you really have no idea how it will actually look.
Accepting this will free you up to just start painting, without having to worry about trying to copy what’s in your mind. Or, being concerned about taming your vision to the canvas.
While you are working, you make decisions about what to do next, as you see how each previous brushstroke, line, color or shape influences the direction of the painting.
You make a mark, assess it, and decide what to do next. You do this thousands of times during the creation of a painting. So, there is no way to predict what will actually happen as you create a painting from Point A (the beginning) to Point Z (the finished painting).
During the making of a painting, you will take many left turns, meander down many off-beaten paths and make many unexpected decisions - as you see your picture develop.
It’s about knowing and not knowing at the same time. And, this can be part of the fun of creating. If you let it be fun. Rather than worrying and stressing that your picture is not looking exactly like what you had envisioned in your head.
If your expectations are too high about your painting looking exactly like what’s in your minds eye, you will most likely be disappointed by your actual experience.
Your original vision is just a starting point. Your finished painting will be different. It will be a re-imagined version of your original vision.
As you attempt to shape your vision, you will explore, discover and make decisions and changes all along the way. And, you will learn.
Start with your original vision and begin to create it. Collaborate with your painting and your thoughts - as they both shift and change. Let things shift and change. This will require leaps of faith and some risk taking. But, it will be worth it. And it will be fun. If you let it be.
Allow the painting to take you where it wants to go.
Best,
David
