MAKE CREATING A PRIORITY

Blog 5:19:19 Copyright 2019 David Limrite Artist Teacher Coach Mentor Make Creating A Priority.jpg

Just finished this small piece. I am experimenting with using a gray ground. Most of my figures have been created on a white ground. This is very different for me. I so desperately wanted to re-paint this ground white around the figure. I am going to play some more with this gray ground idea. Other than that, I love the figure. This may become a larger piece. 10”x 8”, acrylic, charcoal and collage on wood. © 2019 David Limrite

Make Creating A Priority

You are a creative. You make stuff. It’s in your DNA. You were born to create. You have to. You have no other choice. It’s what you do. Creating fulfills you like nothing else. It gives your life purpose. It’s your passion.

So, please don’t put your creativity at the bottom of your priority to-do list.

I do this all the time and it drives mr crazy as to why I would.

I am an artist. I am proud to be an artist. When people ask me what I do, I confidently tell them that I am an artist.

Somehow, I manage to get my creative work done. However, if you look at my to-do lists for any given day, “making art” is on there, but, too often it is listed right there at the bottom. I am pretty sure that I would be even more productive if I put “Make Art” at the top of my to-do list.

This totally messes with my head. It tells me that everything else is more important than my art.

What the what?!

I know that deep down in my heart, this is just not true.

I think I do this because I know I will get around to painting at some point in the day, so there is no need to place it at the top of my list. Which is just silly thinking on my part.

This is not good for my mind, my self-esteem, or my art.

Even if I don’t get to my art making on some days, creating should always be at the top of my to-do lists every day. Even if it is just to remind me that my creativity matters.

From this day forward, I am going to start putting “Make Art” at the top of my do lists, if you will. Lets all start putting our creative time at the top of our to-do lists. Every day! Lets remind ourselves that our art making matters and that we, (as artists), matter.

And, lets see if that helps us create more and be more productive.

Best,

David
