“I think that one of the things is that, if you are going to decide to be a painter, you have to decide that you are not going to be afraid of making a fool of yourself.”
Francis Bacon, Artist
Can and Should
I don’t think that an artist should waste time wondering, “Can I do this?”, or “Should I do this?”.
If you have an idea, whether it is for a single piece or a series, and you are excited about the possibilities, you should go for it.
Spend your energy creating, not wondering, worrying and questioning.
Do you have an idea that excites you? Then, of course, you should attempt it. Commit to your idea and the work it requires in order to grow and develop as an artist.
Which is how you should be approaching every new painting, by the way.
Can you create your idea? Can you bring your vision into reality? Probably. More than likely. You have to try and find out. Don’t talk yourself out of attempting to create something just because you might be questioning whether you can pull if off or not. If you encounter trouble along the way, it just means that you have some learning to do.
The journey itself has lessons to teach.
Have the confidence to take the risk. Listen to your intuition. Trust the talent and skills you posses right now. Get your hands dirty. Make a mess.
Begin, and create something.
You can and you should.
Best,
David
