JUST BEING

Blog $:1:18 Copyright 2018 David Limrite Artist Teacher Coach Mentor Just Being.jpg

Trying to be more painterly. I guess that means less drawing. This is hard for me because I am so drawing-oriented and I love line so much. Also, trying to say more with shapes. Loving that concept. 10”x 8”, acrylic and collage on wood. © 2018 David Limrite

“When I work with a leaf, rock, stick, it is not just that material in itself, it is an opening into the process of life within and around it.”
Andy Goldsworthy, Artist

Just Being

First, apologies are in order. In last week's post, I misspelled Jylian Gustlins first name. She is the artist and author of last week's quote. Her name is Jylian, not Julian.

Second, If you are not familiar with the work of Andy Goldsworthy, the artist and author of this week's quote, check it out. It is amazing and I think you will be pleasantly surprised, especially if you love nature.

Third, I have a one day Mixed Media Figure Drawing & Painting workshop at my studio in Atascadero coming up on Saturday, April 14 from 10am-4pm. There are still a few spaces left. I hope you will consider joining me. In addition to working with the figure, we will also be focusing on shape making, composition, and figure/ground relationships.

OK. Now lets talk about “Just Being”.

Making good, even great art, takes time.

It takes energy, passion, practice, risk taking, mistake making, and learning.

It takes being truthful, authentic, and fearless on the part of the creator.

It takes coming up with ideas and having the courage to love them, believe in them and attempt to convert them into visuals.

It takes persistence, pursuit, and willingness to go through the entirety of the process in order to make your visions come alive.

It takes determination, hard work and an unwillingness to compromise.

For me, it takes a lot of “just being” in my studio with my materials, my ideas, my thoughts and my paintings before something emerges. Before something begins to happen.

“Just being” in the studio making stuff:

Trying things.Adjusting. Correcting. Playing. And being curious.

It’s the only way I know how to create. How to make art. How to make something happen.

Are you allowing yourself to ”just be” in your studio? As often as you can? On a regular daily or weekly schedule?

Give yourself this gift of “Just Being” and watch what happens.

Best,

David
