“Everything in the world must have design or the human mind rejects it, but in addition it must have purpose or the human conscience shies away from it.”
John Steinbeck, “Travels With Charley”

Passion and Purpose

In terms of creativity and art making, passion is an artists intense enthusiasm and/or interest for her subject matter, technique, chosen medium, process and time spent creating.

Passion helps us get in the studio on a regular basis, even in the face of determined obstacles. Passion keeps us painting. Especially when it is not going very well. Passion comes from deep within the artists soul. Passion is the intense love you have for being an artist and for the process of making art.

Purpose is the reason for existence. It is the reason for which something exists: The purpose of life. Purpose also has to do with determination and the desire or resolve necessary to accomplish a goal.

I think that both passion and purpose are important and necessary qualities for any artist to possess. And, I also think an artist cannot have one without the other.

If you have lost motivation or momentum, perhaps revisiting your passion and purpose might be helpful.

Best,

David
