“I was born in Hoboken. I am an American. Photography is my passion. The search for truth is my obsession.”
Alfred Stieglitz

Fear Of Obsession

I think the word “obsession” has gotten a bad rap. I equate obsession with passion. I realize that there are negative obsessions, as well as positive ones. I guess I choose to have the word “obsession” be a productive word, rather than an unproductive one.

My creativity has everything to do with a passion for an idea, concept, technique or style. And continues with an obsession to make it a reality. To take this idea and make it real. To take a technique, explore it and get really good at it.

What helps me to obsess is to pursue ideas that I am really passionate about, not merely just interested in. Mere interest does not lead to obsession.

When I pursue an idea or technique with obsession, it ignites my passion. My passion refuels my obsession. Which leads to momentum. And often ends with very powerful, beautiful and aesthetic images.

Do not fear obsession. Do not fear being obsessed. Passion and obsession go hand-in-hand and are positive and productive ways to approach creativity.

Success often goes to those artists who obsess.

Best,

David
