TIME OUT

A recent sketch in my new sketchbook project. I am just making stuff at this point. Searching. Making marks. Getting some paper dirty. Having fun. Untitled, 15”x 11”, mixed media on paper. Copyright 2016, David Limrite.

TIME OUT

Do you love creating?

Is it your passion?

Would you rather make art than do almost anything else?

Me too. So, why then, do we often make excuses for not spending quality time creating?

And speaking about time… time seems to be one of our favorite excuses. Doesn’t it?

“I am too busy with other things. I don’t have time to paint.”

“I have so many other commitments, there does not seem to be any time left in the day to make art.”

“My family needs me, which leaves very little time for creating.”

“I am waiting until I have several hours or days in a row to devote to my art.”

Do these sound familiar?

I hate to break it to you, but there is never going to be enough time, or the right time, to make art. If you are waiting for the perfect time to create, you will always be waiting. And you won’t be creating. Ever!

Time is not your friend. Time is not a champion for your creativity. Time is never going to make it easy for you to be an artist. Life is not going to stop and allow us to spend some time creating. Life goes on. So, we have to learn to create in the middle of things. We have to accept the realities of trying to be an artist (that it can be difficult and challenging at times) and create anyway.

We allow time to control our lives, and it is especially difficult for artists. So, as artists, we have to control how we use our time. We have to be the boss of our time. We have to take charge of our time. We have to give ourselves the gift of time. And the gift of creativity.

If not now, when?

BTW, there are just a few spots left in my ELEVATE Artists Mentor Program, beginning August 27 in San Luis Obispo County. You owe it to yourself and your creativity to check it out. You do not want to miss this. I won’t run this program again until next year. Click the link below to check it out and don’t miss watching the very cool video we created that embodies the spirit of this program.

Best,

David
