“Make art as much as possible to find your voice. Play as much as possible; don’t be too serious. Combine everything you learn like soup - play, relax and paint.”
Jylian Gustlin, Artist

Your Art Thing

You might as well face it. This art thing of yours is not going to go away. Despite the odds against you, you are still an artist who makes stuff. Despite your minds best efforts to thwart you, you still have an inner need to create.

Art making is part of your DNA. Being an artist is who you are. Creating makes you feel alive. (Most of the time).

What do you do when you don’t feel like creating? When creating doesn’t make you feel alive? When you are frustrated? When you are filled with self-doubt? When you have lost your way?

Then what?

One thing that helps me when I am feeling this way, is to try and focus solely on what I am currently working on. Right now. At this minute. I try not to focus on past mistakes and failures. I try not to focus on my fear of the unknown. I try not to worry about what people will think of my crazy drawings and paintings.

These kinds of thoughts take too much valuable energy away from working on my current project. They rob me of my love and zest for creating.

So instead, I try and focus on where I am right now. On where my brush or pencil is taking me today. I try to focus and direct all of my energy towards making this current piece the best thing that I can make.

This art thing you have is here to stay. You might as well try and create the best stuff that you can each and every day. And not worry about all the rest.

Best,

David
